Sharps New Model 1863 Carbine 50-70 Cartridge Conversion
This is a Sharps New Model 1863 Carbine in 50-70.  It has a 22″ round barrel German silver blade front sight with a Lawrence patent leaf rear sight. It is lever action breach loading and the action retains the Lawrence primer feed mechanism on the lock plate. The left side is equipped with a saddle ring & bar. The stocks are walnut. The forearm is attached with a barrel band and the straight grip stock has a steel carbine butt plate.

Condition:
The overall condition of this Sharps 1863 carbine is very good to fine. The blue finish is lightly faded on the barrel but retains nearly 80% of the original finish. Though the barrel is showing spots of wear and freckling. The action retains some lightly visible case colors in protected areas with the balance fading to soft gray. The legends are strong with the Lawrence patent on the barrel sight slightly faded. The original wood finish shows scattered scratches, marks & small dents typical of a rifle of this age. The mechanics of the action are in fine condition with the action chambering and locking up tight and ejecting a round strongly. The bore is somewhat bright and retains fine rifling which shows some spotted light pitting in places.

Following the Civil War, thousands of percussion-style 1863 carbines were obsolete with the development of repeating rifles. After the war the U.S. government subsequently converted thousands of these carbines into centerfire metallic cartridge carbines using the .50-70 Government round. These saw service throughout most of the Indian Wars in the west. They were used by the US Cavalry early before the the 45-70 was developed. But continued to be used by indian scouts thoughtout the west.

These Sharps carbines in 50-70 are handy and can make excellent hunting rifles when a load is developed for them. We have 50-70 black power rounds available for this carbine. This carbine is an antique and can be shipped directly to the buyer.
