Springfield Krag rifle in 30-40 Krag
This is a bolt action Springfield Krag rifle cut down to a carbine configuration made in 1900. It has 22″ barrel Krag rifle barrel sight and a 1903 style banded front sight. This Krag features the unique side-loading hinged gate on the right side of the receiver, which feeds cartridges into a internal 5 shot rotary magazine. It has the correct magazine cut off on the left side of the action which allows for single shot firing. The butt plate is equipped with a trapdoor to allow for a cleaning rod. It has a walnut stock that has cartouches on the right side of the stock and a circle P under the stock below the trigger guard.
Condition:
The overall condition of this Krag “carbine” is fine. The metal surfaces are finished bright and legends are strong. There is some minor pitting on the action near the address and the finish has a patina gray/brown in places. The bore is bright with some light pitting and sharp rifling. The stock is an even dark color and has some bumps and nicks from use over the years. There is a small crack at the nose of the stock in front of the barrel band but goes nowhere. The stock has been sanded and refinished at some point in its life but the cartouches are still present although faint with the left side cartouche dated 1900. The serial number of this rifle indicates it was manufactured in 1900 as a rifle. Over 500,000 US Krag rifles were made and many later were sporterized. The current configuration of this rifle is similar to reworked Krag rifles done by Bannerman. Also the US Government authorized the DMC (Director of Civilian Marksmanship) to rework rifles into carbine length rifles because there was such a high demand from civilians for shorter light weight rifles for hunting. The process was to shorten the 30″ rifle to 22″ and adding a 1903 type banded front sight. Then to bob the stock to carbine length. This was done at the Benicia Arsenal in 1927. Most of these reconfigured rifles retained many of their rifle features such as single swivels and rifle sights.
This Krag is a consignment gun. The fellow who owns this rifle has owned it for 40 years and used it for hunting and target shooting. The 30-40 Krag round is a fine hunting caliber certainly capable of any game east of the Mississippi.
